The table illustrates the proportion of people participating in seven sports in a European country between 1999 and 2009. Overall, football consistently remained the most popular activity throughout the period, despite a noticeable decline, whereas golf and tennis experienced the most substantial growth. Meanwhile, participation in swimming, basketball and yoga witnessed only marginal changes. In 1999, football attracted the highest percentage of participants at 57%, though this figure fell steadily to 48% in 2009. In contrast, tennis rose by 8%, while golf showed an even more remarkable increase, more than doubling from 8% to 17%. Swimming, on the other hand, remained relatively stable, rising slightly by 2% in the first five years and remaining at 34% in the later years. In addition, volleyball displayed a minor fluctuation, moving from 17% to 20% and back to 18%. Yoga, in spite of being the least popular sport initially at 10%, recorded a modest rise to 13% by the end of the decade, while basketball saw a gradual decrease by 1% every 5 years. | - marginal (adj): nhỏ, không đáng kể - remain relatively stable: duy trì tương đối ổn định - display a minor fluctuation: thể hiện sự dao động nhỏ - record a modest rise: ghi nhận một mức tăng nhẹ - see a gradual decrease: chứng kiến sự giảm dần |
Task 2: Some people said that what children watch on television influenced their behaviour, others argue that the amount of time influenced their behaviour. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Sample: (262 words)
In the modern digital era, television plays a significant role in shaping children’s cognitive and social development. While some people believe that the content of what children watch has a greater impact on their behaviour, others argue that the duration of screen exposure is the determining factor. From my point of view, both factors are influential, yet the nature of the content exerts a more profound effect. On the one hand, the quality and types of television programs directly influence children’s moral and behavioural patterns. A number of studies have shown that exposure to violent or aggressive shows, for instance, may normalize antisocial conduct, leading young viewers to imitate what they see on screen. Conversely, educational programs such as documentaries delivering knowledge or cartoons promoting empathy can foster positive values. In this sense, television functions as a double-edged medium, capable of either cultivating or corrupting young minds, depending on the message it conveys. On the other hand, the excessive amount of screen time also poses serious consequences. Spending long hours watching television often results in reduced physical activity, limited interaction, and shorter attention spans. Moreover, excessive viewing can displace valuable learning time, potentially hindering academic performance and emotional growth. Hence, regulating screen duration is crucial to maintaining a balanced lifestyle. In conclusion, although both the content and duration of television viewing shape children’s behaviour, I firmly believe that what children watch is the primary determinant of their behavioural development. Nevertheless, by properly monitoring content and setting viewing limits, parents can ensure television becomes a constructive educational tool rather than a detrimental distraction. | - exert a more profound effect: ảnh hưởng, tác động sâu sắc - a double-edged medium: một phương tiện có mặt tốt và xấu, con dao hai lưỡi - hinder (v): cản trở, gây khó khăn - a primary determinant: yếu tố quyết định - a detrimental distraction: sự sao nhãng có hại/tiêu cực |
