What is the Past Simple? – Thì Quá Khứ Đơn là gì?

Past Simple (Quá khứ đơn) là thì dùng để diễn tả hành động đã xảy ra và kết thúc trong quá khứ.


Usage – Cách dùng

  • Diễn tả hành động đã xảy ra tại một thời điểm cụ thể trong quá khứ 

I visited Paris last year. (Tôi đã đến Paris năm ngoái.)

  • Diễn tả một chuỗi hành động trong quá khứ 

She woke up, brushed her teeth, and left for work. (Cô ấy thức dậy, đánh răng và rời đi làm.)

  • Diễn tả thói quen hoặc hành động lặp đi lặp lại trong quá khứ (không còn tiếp diễn ở hiện tại) 

When I was a child, I played soccer every day. (Khi tôi còn nhỏ, tôi chơi bóng đá mỗi ngày.)

  • Diễn tả một sự kiện hoặc trạng thái trong quá khứ 

They were best friends in high school. (Họ là bạn thân thời trung học.)


Form – Cấu trúc

(+) Affirmative (Khẳng định)

S + V2/V-ed + (O)

  • She worked late last night.

  • They went to the beach last summer.


(-) Negative (Phủ định)

S + did not (didn’t) + V (bare infinitive) + (O)

  • He didn’t like the movie.

  • We did not go to school yesterday.


(?) Interrogative (Câu hỏi)

 Did + S + V (bare infinitive) + (O)?

  • Did you see the news?

  • Did she study for the exam?


Practice – Bài tập thực hành

Fill in the blanks with the correct past simple form of the verbs in brackets.

  1. We ___ (visit) our grandparents last weekend.

  2. She ___ (not go) to the party last night.

  3. ___ you ___ (watch) the football match yesterday?

  4. He ___ (finish) his homework before dinner.

  5. They ___ (not see) the movie because they were busy.


Rewrite the sentences in the negative form.

  1. She studied English last year. → She ___ English last year.

  2. They bought a new car. → They ___ a new car.

  3. I traveled to Japan in 2019. → I ___ to Japan in 2019.
