Đề Thi IELTS Writing 14.09.2025

Task 1: The bar chart below shows the percentage of people living alone in five different age groups in the USA between 1850 and 2000. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Sample: (209 words)

The bar chart compares the proportions of individuals living alone in the United States across five distinct age cohorts over a period of 150 years, starting in 1850.

Overall, the tendency to reside alone experienced a significant upward trend across all demographics throughout the timeframe. Notably, the likelihood of living alone was positively correlated with age, and the year 2000 witnessed an unprecedented surge compared to previous centuries.

In 1850, solitary residence was relatively rare and was only recorded in people over 37. The age group of 37-46 and 47-54 shared a similar percentage of 2.5% while that of the oldest group was slightly higher, at 3%. By 1900, these percentages grew modestly, with the 55-64 age group reaching nearly 4%, whereas younger cohorts remained stable.

The most dramatic shift occurred by 2000. The proportion of solo dwellers aged 55-64 soared to 17%, nearly double its figure at 9% in 1950. Substantial growth was also evident in the 47-54 and 27-36 cohorts, which escalated to 13% and 8% respectively. Even the 17-26 group, which first appeared at 2% in 1950, rose to 5% by the end of the period. In contrast, the 37-46 group saw a more moderate increase, reaching only 7% by the end of the period.

- positively correlated: tỉ lệ thuận

- an unprecedented surge: một sự tăng vọt chưa từng có

- solitary residence: sống đơn độc

- solo dweller: người sống một mình

- escalate (v): tăng mạnh, leo thang

Task 2: Advertisements are becoming more and more common in everyday life. Is it a positive or negative development?

Sample: (270 words)

From billboards on busy streets to sponsored content on social media, advertising has become an unavoidable presence in modern society. While it plays a dominant role in informing consumers, I strongly believe that its overall impact is largely negative.

It is undeniable that advertisements can provide useful information. They help consumers stay informed about new products, discounts, or technological innovations. For instance, advertisements for smartphones often highlight key features such as newly developed chips or camera quality, enabling buyers to compare options before making a purchase. Beyond its primary informative role, advertising revenue often supports free services and entertainment on popular platforms such as Youtube or news websites, remaining accessible because they are funded by advertising rather than user subscriptions. From this perspective, advertisements contribute to economic activity and business growth.

However, these benefits are outweighed by several serious drawbacks. Most notably, advertising fuels a culture of materialism by constantly persuading people that happiness and success are tied to consumption. To illustrate this, luxury brand advertisements frequently portray wealth and social status as indicators of personal achievement, encouraging viewers to equate self-worth with what they own. Moreover, through carefully crafted persuasive techniques, advertisers often exaggerate product benefits. A common example is advertising for cosmetic products or dietary supplements that claim to deliver flawless skin or rapid weight loss within days, despite lacking reliable scientific evidence to support such promises.

In conclusion, although advertisements can serve an informative purpose and contribute to economic growth, their dominance in everyday life simultaneously drives materialism and misleads the public through exaggerated claims. Therefore, the rapid expansion of the advertising industry represents a negative development.

- a dominant role: vai trò chi phối / chủ đạo

- technological innovation: cải tiến công nghệ

- fuel a culture of materialism: thúc đẩy nền văn hoá đề cao vật chất

- equate self-worth (with sth): đánh đồng giá trị bản thân (với điều gì đó)

- mislead the public: gân hiểu lầm cho công chúng / dẫn dắt dư luận sai lệch
