1. How important is it for people to preserve their cultural traditions?
Sample Answer (Band 7.0+):
I would say it really matters to keep cultural traditions alive, since they are a part of who we are.
These customs help us feel connected to our cultural roots, give us a sense of belonging, and let us pass down knowledge and values to younger generations. These days, with everything becoming more global, smaller cultures might fade away, so keeping traditions is a way to protect that diversity. On top of that, things like festivals or rituals bring communities together and can even boost tourism and education.
All in all, preserving traditions helps us stay true to our identity while building stronger, more connected communities.
Useful Language:
Vocabulary / Expression | IPA (Oxford NAmE) | Meaning |
cultural roots | /ˈkʌltʃərəl ruːts/ | cội nguồn văn hoá |
sense of belonging | /sens əv bɪˈlɔːŋɪŋ/ | cảm giác được thuộc về (một nơi, nhóm người) |
fade away | /feɪd əˈweɪ/ | dần biến mất, phai mờ |
rituals | /ˈrɪtʃuəlz/ | nghi thức, lễ nghi |
2. How globalization affected local traditions in your country?
Sample Answer (Band 7.0+):
Globalization has kind of reshaped how we do things, especially when it comes to local traditions.
These days, international trends affect how people dress, what they eat, and even how they celebrate things—especially among young people. For example, traditional clothes like the áo dài are not worn as often, and some folk festivals are slowly fading away. But it’s not all bad, in some cases, it brought old traditions back in creative ways. Traditional music like Cải lương or ca trù to name a few, has been reintroduced and featured in online videos and even performed at international events.
So in the end, globalization has both challenged and revived our traditions in different ways.
Useful Language:
Vocabulary / Expression | IPA (Oxford NAmE) | Meaning |
reshape | /ˌriːˈʃeɪp/ | tái định hình |
folk festival | /fəʊk ˈfestɪvl/ | lễ hội dân gian |
reintroduce | /ˌriːɪntrəˈduːs/ | đưa trở lại |
revive | /rɪˈvaɪv/ | làm sống lại, khôi phục |
3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of adopting foreign customs?
Sample Answer (Band 7.0+):
Well, I think adopting foreign customs can be a double-edged sword.
On the plus side, it helps people stay open-minded and adapt to new lifestyles. For example, things like celebrating Christmas or Valentine’s Day in Vietnam have become really popular and add some fun to people’s lives. It also makes it easier to connect with people from other cultures. But on the flip side, it might water down local traditions. Some young people get so caught up in foreign trends that they start ignoring their own culture.
So yeah, it’s good to embrace new things, but we also need to hold on to what makes our culture unique.
Useful Language:
Vocabulary / Expression | IPA (Oxford NAmE) | Meaning |
double-edged sword | /ˌdʌbl ˈedʒd sɔːrd/ | con dao hai lưỡi, vừa lợi vừa hại |
water down | /ˈwɔːtər daʊn/ | làm nhạt đi, mất chất |
embrace | /ɪmˈbreɪs/ | đón nhận |
unique | /juˈniːk/ | độc đáo |
4. How are traditional celebrations different from modern ones?
Sample Answer (Band 7.0+):
Well, I think traditional celebrations are usually more meaningful and rooted in culture.
On one hand, traditional celebrations often involve family gatherings, rituals, and a strong sense of community. Take Tết in Vietnam, for example—it’s not just about food and decorations, but also about paying respect to ancestors and starting fresh. On the other hand, modern celebrations tend to be more commercial and media-driven. Events like Christmas or Halloween, which are getting popular here, are more about having fun, giving gifts, or posting on social media. So yeah, traditional ones feel deeper, while modern ones are more about entertainment and trends.
So, I’d say traditional celebrations are richer in cultural value, while modern ones lean more towards entertainment and popular influence.
Useful Language:
Vocabulary / Expression | IPA (Oxford NAmE) | Meaning |
rooted in culture | /ˈruːtɪd ɪn ˈkʌltʃər/ | bắt nguồn từ văn hoá |
family gatherings | /ˈfæməli ˈɡæðərɪŋz/ | buổi tụ họp gia đình |
pay respect to ancestors | /peɪ rɪˈspekt tu ˈænsestər/ | tỏ lòng thành kính với tổ tiên |
media-driven | /ˈmiːdiə ˈdrɪvn/ | bị ảnh hưởng bởi truyền thông |
5. Should schools teach students more about national festivals and customs?
Sample Answer (Band 7.0+):
Yes, I strongly believe it’s important to educate students about traditional festivals and cultural practices.
These things are part of who we are, and learning about them helps young generations stay connected to their roots. Nowadays, many of them know a lot about holidays like Christmas or Halloween, but not much about their own cultural traditions like Tết or Mid-Autumn Festival. Teaching these topics in class can raise cultural awareness and even make students feel more proud of their identity. Plus, it helps keep these traditions alive for the future.
That’s pretty much how I see it. It’s definitely something worth including in the school curriculum.
Useful Language:
Vocabulary / Expression | IPA (Oxford NAmE) | Meaning |
cultural practice | /ˈkʌltʃərəl ˈpræktɪs/ | tập quán văn hoá |
raise awareness | /reɪz əˈwernəs/ | nâng cao nhận thức |
keep (something) alive | /kiːp əˈlaɪv/ | duy trì |
school curriculum | /skuːl kəˈrɪkjələm/ | chương trình học ở trường |
